Viral Meningitis,Symptoms and Treatments

Late summer and early fall is the time for kids to go back to school; that same time that is common for outbreaks of meningitis, contagious through close contact. There are actually several forms of meningitis, but are all types of the disease infectious?

Meningitis is an inflammation of the tissue surrounding the brain. While some types of meningitis cause just mild, flu like symptoms, others are serious enough to cause death within several hours. Some children, although not becoming ill, may carry the virus causing meningitis; contagious to others through respiratory secretions. The most common types of the disease are viral and bacterial, with different strains of each resulting from multiple causes. Since each type can begin with the same symptoms, it is important to seek medical help as soon as possible for an accurate diagnosis.

Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes which blanket both the brain and spinal cord. The usual cause for the disease is a virus or bacteria, but there are some medications and illnesses that can induce meningitis. It is highly communicable; therefore it is common within those who are in close quarters with a number of people for extended periods of time. This would include young children, teens and college students. Preventative measures are always recommended; immunizations for the disease are available and recommended for children, and good hygiene habits of hand washing can inhibit the spread of bacteria. One note to remember is that while immunization is available, it may not prevent all forms of meningitis.

One of the most dreaded diseases by parents in the UK and most other parts of the world: Source of terror to most families in these parts of the world. The dread attached to this disease is because of the nature of the disease. Cerebrospinal meningitis is the inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord as implied by the name and leads to various diseases. It is usually accompanied by a blood poisoning situation known as septicemia. These could be very disastrous but the good news is people do not recover from it depending on the approach. It sometimes leads to deafness or blindness because it develops rapidly and its symptoms are quite difficult to distinguish from less serious infections. To make things brief let us go over to the Symptoms.

Symptoms

Firstly, you'll have a high fever. Accompanying which will be a repeated and serious headache. Alongside to that there'll be an agonizing neck that may also feel terribly stiff. This pain and stiffness will become more evident if you try to touch your chest with your chin. There will be vomiting but along with that you will also feel very dizzy. You'll be in a half state of consciousness.

This suggests that there'll be a reduced level of consciousness that you'll have to endure if you are suffering from bacterial meningitis. The cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) is the fluid that circulates in the spaces in and around the brain and spinal cord. In the past, most meningitis cases occurred in children younger than 5 years. But as a result of the protection offered by current childhood vaccines, most meningitis cases now occur in young people between the ages of 15 and 24.

Older also tend to have a higher incidence of meningitis than do young children. Bacterial meningitis is less common than viral meningitis but is usually much more serious and can be life-threatening if not treated promptly. Many different types of bacteria can cause meningitis: Group B Streptococcus, Escherichia coli, and Listeria monocytogenes are the most common causes of meningitis in newborns. It's also possible to get viral meningitis as a complication of chickenpox, but this is also very rare in healthy kids.

Treatments

But, in cases of migraines, cluster headaches, and other tension induced headaches, and other cases where they occur frequently and stay on for longer spells, the treatment is more comprehensive. Treatment is not just about relieving you from the pain, but also getting to the root cause of headaches, which varies from one person to the other. A comprehensive treatment consists of medical prescriptions, combined with natural remedies which aid in the relief of head pain, changes in life style, avoidance of foods that trigger migraines or allergic reactions, avoiding stressful situations, exercising regularly and adopting a positive attitude, all put together, makes for effective treatment.

A headache is a pain in the muscles and nerves of the head and neck of an individual. Treatment of a headache consists of taking into account various factors like the type of headache, frequency of headache, and to ascertain what its causes are. For better understanding and diagnosis a headache is classified into different categories, which is useful in the treatment of headache.A mild analgesic in the case of a one off headache, which comes once in a way and disappears, is the most common treatment resorted to by individuals. One would just self medicate and take some basic steps to relieve one self from the pain.
